5 Element5Year : 2021
Collaboration : 4dimension

This series originated from an invitation by the brand 4dimension to create visual elements for their lookbook shoot. They requested five sandbag-like cushions to be used within the scene. Noting the frequent presence of yin-yang symbols in their visual identity, I chose the concept of the Five Elements (Wu Xing) as a thematic response and extension.

The Five Elements—a system rooted in transformation, balance, and relational dynamics—is inherently fluid and immaterial. I aimed to give these ideas a physical form, while intentionally avoiding fixed shapes or functions. Instead, I preserved a sense of ambiguity and perception within each object. These cushions are not symbolic representations, but vessels—open forms that invite the viewer to encounter a state that exists between the material and the imaginary.

The fabric was provided by the brand, composed of a patchwork of three types of plain, undyed cloth, each with different weights and weaves. I was responsible for the overall design concept and pattern development.

The cushions were made using muslin—a material commonly used in the prototyping phase of garment production. Often seen as unfinished or in-progress, muslin carries a sense of openness and transformation. This quality aligns with the essence of the work itself: existing in a state between completion and becoming, between the material and the conceptual.

This series of photos centers around the concept of “unfinished.” At the time, my family’s house was undergoing renovation—a space inherently filled with a sense of construction and incompletion. I chose to photograph the not-yet-finished cushions on-site, allowing the fabric, the space, and traces of everyday life to intersect. Together, they evoke a transitional, undefined state.
